Харчування
Tapirs are herbivores. In forests, they feed on fruits, leaves and berries. In addition, tapirs can feast on algae: if there is a body of water nearby, these animals spend a lot of time in it. In the water, they feed and swim and hide from predators.
Опис виду
Tapirs look a bit like a pig, but have a short trunk adapted for grabbing. The sizes of tapirs vary from species to species, but as a rule, the length of a tapir is about two meters, the height at the withers is about a meter, and its weight is from 150 to 300 kg. Life expectancy in the wild is about 30 years, a cub is always born alone, pregnancy lasts about 13 months. Newborn tapirs have protective coloring consisting of spots and stripes. Tapirs have four-toed front legs, and three-toed rear legs, with small hooves on their toes that help them move on muddy and soft ground. The three species of tapir living on the plains are usually nocturnal or crepuscular. The smaller mountain Andean tapir is mainly diurnal, but all four species move into less accessible habitats and transition to a more nocturnal lifestyle due to hunting.
