DESCRIPTION OF THE SPECIES

A large cat. The male’s body length is 190-210cm, tail length is up to 110cm. Lionesses are smaller than lions, their body length is 30cm shorter on average. Males are 85-120cm in height. Fur covering the body and legs is short and yellowish, sometimes with faint spots. Lions are famous for their sexual dimorphism: the head, neck, chest and partly belly of males are covered with long shaggy hair (mane) of light-yellow to black colour. Among all representatives of felines, it is possible to easily distinguish a male from a female thanks to the height and thick mane. Lions are the only cats living in social groups – prides – of 10-15 animals. Females of different age form a pride, because they are the main providers of prey. The function of males is in procreation and territory protection. It is a vulnerable species. The total count of all African subspecies is 200,000-250,000 animals. The rarest of them are Senegal and Katanga lions. Barbary and Cape lions are not found in the wildlife, but it is possible to meet them in zoos
